Every judge is subject to criticism from time to time, we all accept that as part of the job.  Reasonable and fair criticism of judges and other public officials by the public and the media is one of the hallmarks of a democratic society.  However, sometimes judges are subject to unjust or unfair criticism which is motivated by retaliation or intimidation, or simply a misunderstanding of a judge’s legal role or how the judicial system works.  This article by the American Bar Association’s Standing Committee on Judicial Independence is designed to be a guide for ways judges can ethically and reasonably respond to such unfair or unjust criticism in a timely manner.
